General Information:
- Latin Name: Lentinula edodes
- Common Name: Shiitake Mushroom
Cultivation
- Shiitake mushrooms are grown year-round in bags containing a mixture of straw and sawdust
Description:
- Caps range from 5 to 15cm in diameter
- The stem is usually 2.5 to 5 cm in length and 1.2 to 2.5 cm in diameter
- The gills start off white and turn a yellowish or light brown as the mushroom ages
- The spores are white in colour
Taste and application:
- Flavour: Shiitake mushrooms have a savory, umami flavor that becomes richer and more pronounced when dried
- Texture: They have a meaty texture, which makes them a popular substitute for meat in vegetarian dishes
- Uses: Commonly used in a variety of dishes, including soups, stir-fries, sauces, and as a topping for pizza or noodles
