The RHS Plant of the Year is awarded annually at the Chelsea Flower Show and celebrates the exciting and diverse new plants launched each year. Previous winners have gone on to be incredibly popular with gardeners keen to add an exciting new addition to their displays.
The RHS Plant of the Year winner for 2023 is Agapanthus 'Black Jack'. Bred by De Wet Breeders, 'Black Jack' is a dramatic new introduction offering incredible flower heads, filled with black buds that open to deep black-purple striped flowers which fade to deep purple with age. The black buds offer a stunning contrast to the purple striped flowers, that develop a metallic sheen over time. Each flower head (or umbel) is packed with dozens of individual florets that provide flowers over many weeks in summer. Agapanthus 'Black Jack's' flowers are open-faced and hang on the flower head in a rounded formation. Its strong upright stems and broad evergreen foliage provide a striking form that will add presence and drama to any garden border or patio.
Second Place
Hydrangea serrata 'Gotemba Nishiki' bred by Mr. Nagasaki T. from Japan (represented by company Osco Garden BV.) This stunning Hydrangea boasts pink, white and green variegated foliage in spring and two-tone ruby and pale red lacecap flowers. We will have this plant in stock this Autumn.
Third Place
Weigela 'Camouflage' bred by Charles Vain. A naturally compact variety with variegated bright and dark green foliage and masses of bright red flowers during May and June.
