Irises require a well-drained alkaline or neutral soil. They do best in full sun, with the rhizomes facing south for full exposure.
- Plant the rhizomes with the top of the root just at soil level.
- In areas of high rainfall, it is better to plant them on shallow mounds just proud of the soil.
- They should be spaced out at least 30cm (12in) apart and must not be crowded by other plants. Irises benefit from an application of blood fish and bone fertiliser sprinkled around the rhizomes in early spring.
- Divide bearded irises every two to three years, in September, discarding the oldest rhizomes in the centre.
- Deadhead after flowering (you can snap off the stems near the base) and remove dead leaves where necessary.
