Drosera capensis

Drosera capensis is one of the easiest and most rewarding sundews to grow, producing a clump of glistening green leaves covered with red-tipped sticky glands. These specialised leaves trap small insects such as midges, mosquitoes and small houseflies, then slowly curl around their catch. In good light, the sparkling droplets on the foliage create a particularly attractive display.

Perfect for a sunny windowsill, conservatory or cold greenhouse, this South African carnivorous plant also produces long-lasting pink flowers held above the foliage on slender stems. It can be grown indoors throughout the year and may also be placed outside during the warmer summer months.

  • Other names: Cape Sundew
  • Useful to know: Non-toxic - safe around pets and children
  • Flower colour: Pink
  • Eventual height: 20-30cm
  • Origins: South Africa

Drosera Care Sheet

Light: Grow in very bright light with several hours of direct sunlight each day. Strong light encourages compact growth and plenty of sticky dew on the leaves.

Water: Keep the compost consistently wet using rainwater or distilled water only. Stand the pot in a shallow tray of water during active growth and never allow the compost to dry out.

Soil/Nutrition: Use specialist carnivorous plant compost or an unfertilised mix suitable for sundews. Never use ordinary houseplant compost or fertiliser.

Humidity: Normal household humidity is usually suitable. Good light and consistently wet compost are more important than very high humidity.

Pruning and propagation: Remove dead leaves and spent flower stems as required. Propagate from seed, leaf cuttings or by dividing established plants.

Experience level: Beginner.

Drosera Plant Care

Watering

Keep this plant moist. To make it easy, keep the plant on a dish filled with water. As soon as it is dry refill it.

Location

Keep the Drosera in a light place. If the plant loses its “dew” this is an indication that it needs more humidity. Move to a more humid environment or cover it with glass.

Of the Drosera’s in our current range, the Drosera filiformis, nidiformis and binata are all winter hardy. This does not apply to the rest and they should be brought in before the start of the winter.

Fertilizer

The Drosera does not need fertilizer.
